Jazz & Fly Fishing interview online

The big Polish internet fishing site jerkbait.pl has published a big interview with the JFF guys, and it is in English!

Kuba Standera: What is in Your opinion the link between the jazz and the flyfishing?

Håvard Stubø: The most important link is improvisation – or the ability to adapt to changing conditions. In jazz, you agree on certain principles and frameworks before you start to play, and then you go wherever the music takes you. As we all know, fly fishing is much the same: the fish never behave “like they should” – they are always suprising you, and the conditions are constantly changing. In fly fishing as in jazz, you have to be open-minded, present in the moment and stay focused if you want to succeed.

IKI – All Improvised

I’ve done quite a bit of video fishing in J&FF and as a spin-off I’m getting to videoing’ people too (instead of only fish and Håvard).

I was the man behind the camera for this special album release of IKI here in Copenhagen, so I though I post it here. It’s something else for sure since IKI is a group of 9 scandinavian women (we don’t get that a lot at J&FF) singers improvising everything on the spot. The current pop mainstream music being mostly overproduced for my taste, it’s nice to see people taking other directions. Usually they perform only with vocal, but for the release they had guest artist appearances on sax, trumpet, cello and dance.

As for the camera man, it was good to excercise the shooting chops to keep the next big rising arctic char in focus and perfectly exposed.

Trout Latency

On a blistering hot day last week, I travelled to one of my favourite trout rivers up north. The fishing was very slow indeed, but eventually I managed to find two big trout. The first one ignored my attempts completely in the ultra-bright conditions, making me feel clumsy.

The second one was rising steadily in the late evening, gulping down whatever insects the stream carried. It took my mayfly pattern on the first cast.
