My New Website

Hi!
I´ve made myself a brand new website. It´s called www.havardstubo.com, and features music, videos and info from my musical life outside J&FF. The site itself is really nothing special, but you might find some music there that you´ll like. Check it out!

I also made a video from my own Håvard Stubø Quartet´s Japan tour this January. We had some serious Lost in Translation-moments over there… Japan is just so beautiful! Most of the shots are from Shinjuku and Shiboya areas in Tokyo. Remember to watch in HD!

Music: Ringormens Vals (T. Zetterberg) from Håvard Stubø Quartet Spring Roll Insomnia BLGCD016

Poland in pictures 2: The River San

The final destination on our tour was the river San in Poland. A big fly fishing festival was held there, with lots of fishermen fishing, hanging out and partying. We were introduced to lots of different fly fishing techiques, mostly with nymphs: polish nymphing, czech nymphing, french nymphing… However, our “Nordic” approach with long leaders and dry flies worked just as well. The biggest “problem” was the HUGE hatches. We had read about the massive hatches at San, but when we saw it in real life we couldn’t believe our eyes. At times the water surface looked like a porridge of mayflies. And we only could see what was happening on top of the surface! Every second the grayling and trout had dozens of flies to pick from in their feeding field, and that made the situation tricky for the poor fly fisherman with one single fly at the end of his line…

Thanks to all our new Polish friends, you were fantastic hosts! You sure know how to drink the vodka, but when you come to Finland we’ll see who’s who in the sauna!

Abstinence in England…

England. UK. Over in England right now. I´m on tour around London for about ten days. The weather is fantastic, people friendly, beautiful buildings, and the food is… ok. Since we were in France we got a bit spoiled when it comes to the food quality. But I really love ale pie, nice! I also have to say that the street-food in London is very nice. Indian, Chinese or Creole food was lined up along the streets… everything is everywhere. God bless immigration! Imagine to live without all this fantastic culture and food that now is available in big parts of the world. Unfortunately I couldn’t find any fly fishing store, lets see what the next days will bring.

When traveling with the jazz and fly fishing machine, I always get SNUS from Håvard when I run out of it. This time, I´m touring with a different group, and Håvard is not with us. That basically means that I very soon will run out of SNUS. If you wonder why I write SNUS with capital letters it’s because I miss SNUS. SNUS – what is that? It is the Swedish royal way of filling you body with nicotine. The thing is that you can only buy SNUS in Sweden and Norway. If I won’t get SNUS soon, I’ll get crazy, childish, not very smart and very emotional. Only for a while hopefully. The only thing that helps me during a “trying-to-stop-snusing-period” is to run or eat fat chocolate. Since this England tour involves spending a lot of hours in the car, it also means eating massive amounts of chocolate!

I long for running, jumping, swimming, SNUS and SNUS. I Got, simply said, a little bit of running and snusing abstinence right now. Is that good? Is that normal? I don’t know! Anyway, since I right now cant do any working out sessions, I looked after some pictures where we in JFF are exercising. This is what I found on my lap top. Check out Håvards running-style, he is so happy when he gets the possibility to work out. Another detail is that he always runs in the suit-jacket! Next time you guys go fishing – remember to snus or run a little bit, it will give you a stronger body and more fish. If you stumble and fall, you’ll get more time to spend on the noble art of fly tying! /Fredrik, England, Europe, the world

Fall, Thy Name Is Melancholy

Today, I started going through my photos from this summer.
The summers in Lapland are just so desperately short, and it breaks my heart that the next season up there is well over half a year away.

Amidst all the pictures
from this summer´s more successful fishing trips, I found some pictures that puzzled me a bit. At first I couldn´t remember having taken these photos at all, but after watching them for a while it all started coming back. This late-July evening was nothing special, really: I fished for five or six hours, going first to one my favourite rivers. Despite nice weather and little or no wind, the action there was very slow, so I tried a beautiful lake which holds big trout and arctic char instead. That place can sometimes offer spectacular sight fishing in gin-clear water. Well, not this time.

On the way home I decided to try a couple of casts on a third spot. A big, sparkling clear mountain stream pours its icy cold, turqoise-tinted water into a large lake, creating huge flats of white sand. The river´s glassy main current carves a slightly deeper, snake-like trench in the bottom of the flats. And these deeper areas always hold fish. Sometimes small fish, sometimes big fish – you never know until you try. On this particular night, the place held moderate numbers of medium-sized fish that took my flies half heartedly. The whole evening felt, in lack of a better word, quite mediocre, and that´s probably the reason why I couldn´t remember having taken those pictures at first.

Right now, in Oslo´s urban desert, in God Damn October, with Lapland dry fly fishing in the midnight sun at least seven months away, it´s painfully clear to me that there was nothing mediocre about it.

Tough Love, Arctic Char Style

Hi!
I´m in beautiful Savalen, Norway, investigating the secret sex life of the arctic char together with my friends Lars Nilssen (www.larsoglars.no, VGTV) and Morten Kraabøl (fish scientist from NINA). Nilssen got some incredible shots today!
For those of you who aren´t familiar with Lars Nilssen´s work, he is the man in Norwegian fishing film, with a long list of hugely successful productions on his CV. The whole thing will be published on VGTV in a while. I´ll let you know!

While we wait, here´s a quick sneak peek video made from some handheld clips I took with my DSLR today:

Poland in pictures 1: Street fight

After visiting France, it’s beautiful people, sophisticated wines, the famous cuisine and all, we all of a sudden found ourselves in the tiny village called Pobiedna in Western Poland.

Red wine turned into fantastic beer, and the delicate salads and cheeses were replaced by traditional Polish soups and sausages. People were crazy and very friendly! We spent a day at Saraswati Studios, recording new material. The studio is in a beautiful, 300 year-old house with top-of the line equipment. After fiercily arguing about some issues in the arrangements, Joona and Håvard ended up fighting on the street outside the studio. Luckily nobody got hurt, and we made it to the gig in Wroclaw together with our hosts, Ranjit and Roli (thanks guys!).

We´re Back

After ten wonderful days, we´re back home. Severly exhausted, with bulging memory cards, swollen hard drives and shrunken livers.

Did we have fun? Yes. Did we get good material for our long film (working title Season 2, to be released in late winter 2013)? Yes. Did we meet lots of really cool people? Yes. Did we take lots of really funny pictures? Yes. Do I have any of these fabulous pictures here in Oslo? No.
That´s why I´ll give you this special treat instead:
