Gothenburg gig review

Hi! Here’s a review from our recent concert in Gothenburg (Göteborg Daily):

Parken – February 23. Finding a specific way of describing the jazz musician’s muse is by no means an easy thing to do. However, the words of Jazz legend Benny Green seem to deliver a strange sense of clarity in labelling its essence.

“A jazz musician is a juggler who uses harmonies instead of oranges.”

Throw in the art of fly fishing too, and you have a perfect mental image of what to expect from a ‘Jazz and Fly Fishing’ gig in downtown Gothenburg.

Confused? Well, that’s understandable. Yet, it becomes less so when it’s explained that the band found each other through their two passions in life. Jazz, and fly fishing.

However, that does not mean that the band have created a new kind of slippery and wet jazz. Their music is just as specifically chaotic in improvisation, and beautifully entwined in synchronisation, as any other a jazz legend would have made it.

The only difference here is that the flat screen TVs scattered around the dimly lit room, flash images of four young musicians standing waste deep in Scandinavian rivers with their fishing poles.

I’m sure that the likes of Miles Davis would never have imagined the art of Jazz being blended in with the art of fishing. Yet, the mix does somehow seem to work in its own special way, leaving you in a state of tranquillity that can only be found in calm waters.

Rating: 5/5

Sight Fishing Part 2 – The Lapland Jam

Sorry for the long wait, but here it is: the second episode of Sight Fishing.

If you didn’t see part one yet, you can see it here: http://jazzandflyfishing.com/?p=2779

Joona is devastated after losing a huge sight fishing trout. Håvard gives a go with the dry fly. An improvised lapland-joik sets the mood for this episode of Jazz & Fy Fishing. The trout in this clear watered lake looks like a ghost as it hovers in search of food.

Gothenburg planning session

The days we spent in Gothenburg after the release concert were very intensive and inspiring. We spent hours and hours in planning the future, and got some very good insights to film making from our documentary producer Petzi. He illustrated his ideas with drawings that seemed very clear at that moment. I’m not that sure anymore…

One thing that excites me is that the sea trout season is not far away. The coast is open for fishing from 1st of April and now it’s time for some fly tying! Blogs on that coming up soon – stay tuned!

Release Morning

Yesterday was fantastic! The gig was really fun and we had a great night! Joona tried snuff (snus) for the first time and my father won the first price in the lottery – a very nice fly fishing kit from Guideline. Now Håvard and me are sitting at my kitchen table. A day of planning is waiting.

Håvard looks very fresh right now!?

Tonight, Baby!

Releaseparty tonight at Parken, Gothenburg, 19.30. Cheap and wonderful records, semi-cheap beer, great prizes for the lucky ones, and lots of beautiful, happy people! B There!

Brand New Season

Suddenly, spring doesn´t feel that far away anymore. OK, it´s – 10 degrees outside, but yesterday I started looking thorugh my flyboxes, and that´s a sure sign that the new season is drawing closer.

Mostly to sum it up to myself, I thought I´d give you an overview of some of our plans for this season, off the top of my head. You see, we plan to travel quite a bit in 2011 and 2012, and more importantly, we plan to record a brand new film. We´ll be following a script for most of the filming, but we´ll also make loads of blog videos and weird stuff at the same time, and these will be posted as we move along. Here it goes, J&FF´s 2011:

1. Releaseparty in Gothenburg this wednesday!

Be there! Parken, Gothenburg. Videos on the big screen, new album, nice prizes for the lucky ones in the audience and a hell of a lot of fun! We´ll also be recording the first scenes in our new film Season Two there.

2. Seatrout sessions on the Swedish west coast (early April)

Fredrik´s knowledge of the seatrout fishing on Swedens´s west coast is vast, and with the aid of his expert guiding, we´re going to try to make the impossible possible: Make seatrout fishing in the sea look fun and exciting on film.

3.Release concerts in Oslo and Helsinki with urban fly fishing sessions (late May)

Herr Nilsen, Oslo, May 28th, 16.00. Be there, too! Helsinki date coming up.

4. Sight Fishing for monster pike (early June)

Don´t wanna reveal too much here, but I can say that we´ve recieved some tips about a place where you can sight fish for huge, aggressive pike. Crystal clear water and giant predators! Should be exciting (and make good filming).

5. Ransarån (early June)

Ahhh, beautiful Ransarån.  I just have to go there every year. Spectacular, really tricky sight fishing, and the occasional midge and stone fly hatch.

6. Sight Fishing for monster arctic char and brown trout at the mysterious “Z” (early July)

Don´t wanna say too much about this one, you´ll see…

7. Bosnia here we come! (late July)

In late july, we´ll do a couple of gigs in Bosnia and fly fish the beautiful spring creeks. I excite!

8. Late Season Lapland Fever (late August)

Hunting for the big wild browns in Lapland

9. Fall Grayling (late September)

Grayling fishing in southeastern Norway. Should be fun.

10. European tour Poland, Holland, and France (early October)

More details on this later…

11. Down Under, Baby! (late 2011/ early 2012)

Australia/New Zealand, Jazz/Fly fishing.

Well, I might have forgotten something. Maybe J, F or T can fill in the blanks. And like we´ve done all along, we will of course continue to post videos, photos and stories  from other trips and projects that aren´t “official” J&FF material.

And we´ll probably end up doing some more stuff as well. A real salt water fly fishing trip along the jagged coasts of Northern norway is also a priority – le´s see if we can squeeze it in this year or if it´s 2012 material.

PS! 2012 keywords: Japan, Russia, UK, US ++

Album release!

After one summer of touring (and fishing), numerous rehearsals, planning (and fishing) sessions, hours of laughing and crying – we are now ready for releasing the album – Slow Walking Water – the next milestone on our long and rocky road. We are very excited, as this will be the first real physical evidence of our existence.

So please welcome, Wednesday evening at Parken, Gothenburg – come and share the evening with us!

The Alps

Hi!

I just came back from the Swiss Alps near a very nice town called Le Chable. It was my first time there and I was truly amazed by the beautiful mountains. The reality actually beats the postcards this time. The highest peak is called Mont Forte and it peaks at 3300m, and the route from there is color coded black, of course 🙂

Thanks for Pekka and Jaana for taking us there!!

The Alps were almost too good to be true. (As is usually the case with the salmon...)

Check out the slideshow! I was a bit worried about skiing with my camera at start, but it turned out all right, and now I have 900 souveniers from the trip to sort out…
